When you're serious about landing trophy salmon and trout on Lake Ontario, Captain William Marshall's full-day charter out of Mexico, NY delivers exactly what you're after. This isn't your typical half-day trip where you're just getting warmed up when it's time to head back. With eight solid hours on the water starting at 5:30 AM, you'll have the time needed to reach those productive offshore depths where the big fish hang out. The early start puts you in prime position as the fish start their morning feeding patterns, and the extended timeframe means we can adjust tactics throughout the day based on what the lake throws at us.
Your day kicks off before sunrise at the Mexico, NY launch, where Captain Marshall will have the boat rigged and ready to go. The pre-dawn departure isn't just for show – it gets us to the productive water while the fish are most active and before other boat traffic picks up. We'll head out to depths ranging from 80 to 300 feet, depending on where the temperature breaks are setting up and where the baitfish are concentrated. The boat accommodates up to four anglers comfortably, so you'll have plenty of room to work without bumping elbows. All your tackle is provided – we're talking quality downriggers, planer boards, and a full spread of proven lures that have been putting fish in the box all season. When you land something worth keeping, the complimentary filleting service at the dock means you'll head home with restaurant-quality fish ready for the freezer.
Lake Ontario salmon and trout fishing is all about covering water and presenting lures at the right depths where fish are feeding. We run a combination of downriggers and planer boards to spread our offerings across different depth zones and away from the boat's wake. The downriggers let us precision-target specific depths – maybe 45 feet down in 120 feet of water where the thermocline is holding baitfish. Meanwhile, the planer boards pull our lines out to the sides, giving us a wider trolling spread and reaching fish that might be spooked by the boat passing overhead. Captain Marshall reads the sonar constantly, watching for bait schools and adjusting our trolling speed and lure selection based on what we're seeing. When the bite is hot, we might stick with what's working, but the eight-hour timeframe gives us flexibility to move spots or switch techniques if conditions change throughout the day.
Chinook Salmon are the true giants of Lake Ontario, with mature fish commonly hitting 20-30 pounds and occasional monsters pushing 40 pounds or more. These are the fish that'll test your drag system and make your arms ache. Peak season runs from late July through September when they're staging for their spawning runs. Chinooks love structure and temperature breaks, often holding in 80-200 feet of water during summer months. The fight is legendary – powerful runs that can strip line off your reel in seconds, followed by bulldogging deep water battles that can last 20 minutes or more.
Coho Salmon bring a different kind of excitement with their acrobatic fighting style and willingness to jump clear out of the water multiple times during the fight. They typically run 8-15 pounds and are most active from late June through August. Cohos often feed higher in the water column than Chinooks, making them prime targets for our planer board presentations. Their silver flanks and aggressive strikes make them a favorite among anglers who love visual, high-energy battles.
Atlantic Salmon represent one of the Great Lakes' greatest restoration success stories, and Lake Ontario now holds some of the best Atlantic salmon fishing in North America. These fish combine the size potential of Chinooks with the jumping ability of Cohos. They're active throughout the summer months and into fall, with fish ranging from 10-25 pounds. Atlantics are known for their stamina and often provide the longest fights of any species we target.
Rainbow Trout, including the famous steelhead strain, offer year-round action with peak periods in spring and fall. These fish average 8-15 pounds but can exceed 20 pounds, and they're absolute rockets when hooked. Rainbows are often found in slightly shallower water than salmon, making them accessible even when offshore conditions are challenging. Their chrome-bright coloration and aggressive nature make them a consistent crowd-pleaser.
Brown Trout are the craftiest species we target, known for their wariness and preference for low-light conditions. They're most active during dawn, dusk, and overcast days, which makes our early morning start perfect for connecting with quality browns. These fish can exceed 15 pounds and are notorious for making long, powerful runs toward structure. Browns often feed closer to bottom, making them prime targets for our deeper downrigger presentations.
